At Sofos Preparatory Academy, students must meet the graduation requirements as outlined by California Ed Code section 51225.3 by passing the following courses. Unless otherwise stated, each course shall have the duration of one school year.
-
- Three courses in English
- Two courses in mathematics, including one year of Algebra I (EC Section 51224.5)
- Two courses in science, including biological and physical sciences
- Three courses in social studies, including United States history and geography; world history, culture, and geography; a one-semester course in American government and civics, and a one-semester course in economics
- One course in visual or performing arts, world language, or commencing with the 2012-13 school year, career technical education. For the purpose of satisfying the minimum course requirement, a course in American Sign Language shall be deemed a course in foreign language
- Two courses in physical education, unless the pupil has been exempted pursuant to the provisions of EC Section 51241
While the above are the minimum requirements to obtain a high school diploma, Sofos Preparatory Academy’s goal for students is to obtain eligibility for admission to the UC (University of California) system. To be eligible for UC admission, there are A-G requirements that must be met. These A-G requirements refer to a series of courses in specific subject areas that students must complete with a grade of C or better. These subject areas include:
- A: History/Social Science (2 years required)
- B: English (4 years required)
- C: Mathematics (3 years required, 4 years recommended)
- D: Laboratory Science (2 years required, 3 years recommended)
- E: Language Other Than English (2 years required, 3 years recommended)
- F: Visual and Performing Arts (1 year required)
- G: College Preparatory Elective (1 year required)
- Physical Education
These courses are designed to prepare students for college-level work and are required by many universities as part of their admissions process.
Students are also required to pass certain tests or complete certain projects to graduate. Meeting these requirements not only ensures eligibility for college admission but also ensures that students have a strong foundation of knowledge and skills to succeed in their future endeavors.

Eligibility for College
It is important for parents and students to know that fulfilling the A-G requirements alone does not ensure acceptance into a university. Admissions committees also take into account a student’s GPA and exam scores. To improve their chances, students should aim to take more advanced courses beyond the A-G requirements and seek advice from their counselor for guidance on this matter.
